Free Will & Determinism
- Universal Determinism: position that states every event that takes place is caused by some condition beforehand - even if you are or are not aware of all conditions or events. If you were to repeat the same moment under the exact same conditions it will still result in the exact same outcome despite availability to go a different path. This theory is different from the Universal Clockwork theory in that it does not have a mechanism to explain error in its statement alluding to something such as mechanical breakdown.
- Human Determinism vs Human Indeterminism: With human determinism, any action a person takes was the result of some event or events (either external or internal) - but even if you do seem to feel you have freedom to make a choice, it will be an illusion created by your mind to not feel restricted to one choice. Human indeterminism conflicts with this and says that human actions are not predetermined by anything and could be random.
- Incompatibilism: is where free will is only free if the hypothetical reoccurrence of the same act occurs again under the exact same conditions but with freedom to make a different choice. It is called incompatible because it does not adhere to the principles of determinism where the logic states that same causes produce the same effect.
- Compatibilism: is able to accept that determinism can exist alongside true free will, as explained in incompatibilism.
- Hard vs Soft Determinism: from the above definitions, the stance hard determinism takes is that it is sure that there is no such thing as free will - whereas soft determinism allows for the inclusion that there could be some acts of choice that could happen without antecedent conditions.
- Libertarianism (also Indeterminism): says that every human act is free will and it rejects human determinism despite factors that will lead you to one decision; you can still make a choice.
